check out our highlight releases for the 22nd of January: The Düsseldorf based duo BAR releases a remix album on Italic Recordings, one of the newest additions to the finetunes family. We’re very happy to welcome Italic Recordings and their artists like Von Spar, Stabil Elite and many more.
Also Manifold Records provides you with some new tracks to get you through winter this week. Kalipo and Ben Sims will melt your cold feet by making you want to dance immediately. If you’re rather into the heavier kind of music, we offer you the german Hardcore people of Fjørt. Also for all our Alternative fans out there, Shearwater are back with another longplayer on Sub Pop. Scandinavia contributes with Pristine, who bring you some fresh Rock songs from the very north of Norway. If that’s all too many distorted guitars for you, you might like the recording of the last concert of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra with Claudio Abbado. And finally our release of the week is the great new album by Tindersticks on City Slang. Have a listen, maybe you’ll discover some new favourite music.
All the best
“Kontakt” is the essence of the last two years of the band history, a reaction to everything that happened in the lifes of the band members in that time. “We were in the rehearsal room at any imaginable time of day, sometimes for a few days straight”, remembers David, bass player of the trio. “We’ve seen things that make you dubious about humanity. We recognized things, that go wrong. But recognition is only the first step”, he knows. Taking the appropriate actions is the exhausting part. Fjørt is still Fjørt, but they’ve also changed. They’re still the powerful band they used to be, when they started four years ago, but they’ve also become an important voice for many people out there.
Claudio Abbado (1933–2014) was one of the outstanding personalities in the history of the Philharmoniker. In May 2013, their unique partnership ended with Abbado’s last concert with the orchestra. The programme included two of the most important works of musical Romanticism: Berlioz’s visionary “Symphonie fantastique” and Mendelssohn’s magical, shimmering music for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
“Wanderer” sees Kalipo right in his element. Tension builds and dissolves gracefully throughout and the Berliner’s audacious approach to production give his music an authentic and very recognizable feel, one which is clearly Berlin-influenced but which also evades the set templates.
Shearwater is an American indie rock band formed in Austin, Texas in 1999 by Okkervil River members Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff, although Sheff is no longer with Shearwater. “Jet Plane And Oxbow” is their third album release on Sub Pop Records.
Pristine, the band fronted by lead singer and songwriter, Heidi Solheim, hails from the northern parts of Norway – where the summer sun never comes down and the winter is pitch black and ice cold. Pristine’s sound draws its inspiration from Rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Pink Floyd as well as from Soul divas such as Aretha Franklin. “Reboot” is Pristine’s 3rd album, and the first that is released outside Norway // If you’re into bands like BLUES PILLS, you’ll need to hear this!
In January 2016 Tindersticks will release their new album ‘The Waiting Room,’ a milestone not just numerically, but musically and creatively. Their first studio album since 2012’s critically acclaimed ‘The Something Rain’ is the most ambitious, diverse and elaborate album you’ll have heard from Tindersticks in recent years. The Waiting Room’ breathes gravity and features guest appearances by Jehnny Beth of Savages and a particularly poignant duet with long time friend of Stuart Staples and Canadian legend, Lhasa De Sela.
UK techno stalwart Ben Sims adopts his Ron Bacardi alias for an outing on Bass Culture Records, bringing with him three varying slices of 4×4-based music. D’Julz has a deep penchant for bass and funk, and this is evident throughout the EP.
Last summer the Düsseldorf duo BAR – consisting of the Stabil Elite musician Lucas Croon and Christina Irrgang – charmed aficionados of timeless modern pop music with their debut album “Welcome To BAR”. With casual verve, they propagate a musical style somewhere between New Wave, Balearic, Shoegaze, Dream Pop and Noir Songwriting, the two of them singing their way into a league of their own. Following many concerts in clubs, at festivals, in art contexts or gracing the fashion scene, the duo have now invited musician friends from Düsseldorf and Los Angeles to remix their songs, which originally featured instruments such as the recorder, synthesizers, drums, soundtrack samples, vocal collages and even a pocket piano.
Manifold releases some warm sounds that may help you to get through the cold and dark season. “Winter Time Vol. 4” brings you the perfect music for cozy evenings in front of the fireplace. Including artists like: Frank Borell, Cafe Americaine, DJ Maretimo and many others.
